HIMSS Chair
Charles E. Christian, FCHIME, FHIMSS is the Director of Information Systems and CIO of the Good Samaritan Hospital, a 100-year old free-standing, acute care, community hospital in southwest Indiana. Christian is responsible for all information technology activities throughout the enterprise; which includes Good Samaritan Hospital, Samaritan Center, Good Samaritan – Lincoln Trail Hospice, as well as outpatient/outreach clinics. Christian is serving his 19th year in this role and his 37th year in healthcare.
Good Samaritan Hospital received the McKesson VIP Award in 2004, identified as a Solucient Top 100 Hospital – Quality Improvement Leader in 2005, listed as Most Wired (small and rural) in 2004 & 2005, a 2006 recipient of the VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence and a 2008 recipient of the VHA Leadership Award for Supply Chain Excellence.
Christian is a Fellow of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and sits on the HIMSS Analytics Board. Christian serves as the board liaison for the Advocacy & Public Policy Steering Committee and is a member of the HIMSS BOD Executive Committee. Christian is a Fellow and charter member of CHIME and served on the CHIME BOD from 2003 through 2004. Christian is a charter member of the re-established Indiana Chapter of HIMSS and servers as a member of the board of directors. Christian is a member of the Executive Advisory Board for Advance for Health Information Executives magazine, a member of the Technology Advisory Committee for the Vincennes City Schools, and a member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee for Vincennes University. Christian was also recently appointed by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels to the Indiana Health Informatics Corporation Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Good Samaritan Hospital, Christian worked in healthcare IT for Compucare and Baxter Travenol, in both management and implementation roles. Christian started his career in healthcare as a Radiologic Technologist, serving in various Radiology roles for 14 years. Christian studied natural sciences at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Lacrosse University. Christian has presented at the SHS Management Engineering Forum, HIMSS Annual Conference, and HIMSS Summer Conference. Christian has also published several industry related articles and been featured in many other publications.
Vice Chair and Vice Chair Elect
Liz Johnson, RN, MSN, CPHIMS, FHIMSS is the Vice President of Clinical Informatics for Tenet HealthSystem. In this capacity she has responsibility for the strategic vision and the tactical plan for all clinical systems used throughout the Tenet organization of 72 provider organizations. Today the clinical application suite of products for Tenet includes over 3,000 clinical applications and 5,000 custom interfaces. Under Ms. Johnson’s leadership, Tenet has developed and is implementing a comprehensive clinical informatics vision and strategy. Liz speaks nationally and internationally on clinical applications particularly focused on their strategic use as a tool for enhanced patient safety.
Prior to joining Tenet, Liz was and Executive Vice President and National Practice Leader for HIPAA for Healthlink, Inc. As a nationally recognized HIPAA expert, she has shared her in-depth knowledge of HIPAA in over 150 presentations. A partial list of her HIPAA speaking engagements includes ACHE, CHIME and HIMSS. Additionally, Ms. Johnson has directed numerous HIPAA consulting engagements, including readiness assessments, offices of project management, HIPAA planning and training. During her 6 years as an executive with Healthlink, Liz performed a variety of management roles assisting in the migration of a small boutique consulting firm into a major consulting presence in the healthcare market.
With 30 years experience in executive and staff positions throughout provider organizations she understands provider operations from every perspective, and the role IT plays in enabling best practices to be deployed by healthcare providers.
Chair Elect
Barry P. Chaiken, MD has over 20 years experience in medical research, continuous quality improvement, risk management and patient safety. As founder of his own company, he worked on quality improvement studies and clinical investigations for the National Institutes of Health, the Framingham Heart Study, and Boston University Medical School.
Over the past 15 years Chaiken provided expertise in quality and patient safety to provider and payor organizations helping them utilize information technology to improve clinical and administrative activities. He has served as guest lecturer and consultant on topics including patient safety, clinician adoption of information technology, quality improvement and managed care. Chaiken also assisted hospitals and technology firms in the creation of medical software products and authoring of marketing communication materials.
Chaiken is board certified in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health as well as Health Care Quality Management. He is currently Associate Chief Medical Officer at BearingPoint, Inc., an international consulting company, where he provides thought leadership, assists in business development and offers clients his expertise in clinical transformation and quality improvement. Chaiken has delivered more than 50 CME lectures, and is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Patient Safety, the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management, and the journal of Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare. He currently writes a column on quality and technology for the journal of Patient Safety and Quality Healthcare.
Chaiken received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, NYC, his masters in public health degree in health services administration from the Harvard School of Public Health and his bachelors of arts degree in psychology from the University at Albany. He acquired his specialty training from the Centers for Disease Control as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer and from the New Jersey State Department of Health as a preventive medicine resident. He is also a Board Member and a Fellow of the Health Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS), and serves on the Policy Committee of the National Association for Health Information Technology.
John H. Daniels, FHIMSS, FACHE, CPHIMS, CHPS, is Chief Information Officer for Evolvent Technologies, Inc., a small, mission-focused technology services firm with corporate offices in Dulles and Falls Church, Virginia, and San Antonio, Texas. Evolvent provides innovative technology solutions in enterprise information management, knowledge management, information assurance/cyber security, and technology support services.
John is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with over 20 years of military service. He served as Chief Information Officer of the USAF Academy Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the first and only Air Force hospital named on the 25 Most Wired Small and Rural list by Hospital & Health Networks (2005 and 2006). The hospital was also recognized as a 2006 Most Wired Supply Chain Innovator Award finalist. John also served as Chair of the Air Force Medical Information Services Working Group driving the IT direction, standards, policies and procedures for 42,000 employees in 74 military treatment facilities around the world.
John was Senior Fellow and Vice President of IT Operations at the Harris County Hospital District in Houston, Texas before moving to Colorado Springs. He has held CIO positions for other military medical organizations including DoD’s former Health Services Region 5 ensuring contract compliance and executing DoD’s IM/IT strategic plan for a $3.4 billion managed care support contract serving over 650,000 beneficiaries.
John also worked in clinical practice in both private and military settings. He served as a mental health associate in outpatient military treatment facilities and in private psychiatric hospitals, and worked as a psychometrician in a private psychology practice.
John has served on the Board of Directors for two HIMSS state chapters, Ohio and Colorado. He participated on the HIMSS National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) task force and was chair of the HIMSS Air Force CIO Special Interest Group. He also served as President and Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Fisher/Nightingale Houses, Inc., a charitable non-profit organization in Dayton, Ohio. He is a recipient of the Modern Healthcare/Witt-Kieffer Up & Comer Award (2001), ACHE Regent’s Award (2003), AF Surgeon General Information Systems Team of the Year award (2005), and numerous military awards and medals.
John holds an A.A.S. degree in Allied Health Sciences from the Community College of the Air Force, a B.S. degree in Computer Science from West Texas A&M University, and a M.S.A. degree in Health Services Administration from Central Michigan University.
David Finn, CISA, CISM, is the Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Information Services for Texas Children’s Hospital, the largest pediatric integrated delivery system in the United States. He is also the Privacy and Security Officer for Texas Children’s.
Mr. Finn has 27 years’ experience in the planning, management and control of information technology and business processes. He is responsible for all traditional information technology (hardware, software, networking, telephony, application support and other technical infrastructure), and is focused on enabling operating efficiency and deriving business value through the optimization and control of technology. Mr. Finn’s key skills include IT Governance and Control, Project Management, Systems Selection and Implementation, Business and IT Partnering, and IT Audit, Control and Security.
Texas Children’s Hospital won the ECRI Institute 2007 Health Devices Achievement Award, and because of Mr. Finn’s departmental support, TCH also was awarded recognition for Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve. Mr. Finn recently received the Symantec Visionary Award 2008 for Security.
Mr. Finn has presented nationally and internationally on such topics as project management, professional leadership and staff development, and privacy and security. He has contributed to or written articles on IT Management, Disaster Recovery and Security for such as journals as CIO Digest and Baseline.
In addition to HIMSS, Mr. Finn serves on the board of Houston Healthcare for the Homeless and is a member of Information Systems Audit & Control Association, American Health Information Management Association, and College of Healthcare Information Management Executives.
Howard A. Burde, Esquire, Blank Rome LLP represents health information technology companies, health plans, and federal, state, and local governments. He routinely counsels in the following areas:
Mr. Burde’s wealth of healthcare knowledge includes seven years of service as deputy general counsel to Governors Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker of Pennsylvania. In this position, he served as legal counsel for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania responsible for the Departments of Health, Public Welfare, and Aging, as well as for the Health Related Professional Boards, and the Medical Professional Liability Catastrophe Loss Fund. He also advised on all managed care, health insurance, public health, and health and human service issues. From June 1995 until November 1997, Mr. Burde was chief counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Prior to his government service, Mr. Burde had seven years of private practice experience representing health care providers. Mr. Burde is editor and contributing author of three books: A Guide To Establishing RHIOs (HIMSS, 2007), The Utilization Management Guide (URAC, 2004), The Health Laws of Pennsylvania (PBI Press, 2001) and the forthcoming A Guide to Understanding and Implementing Personal Health Records: The Technology, Economics, Politics and Law (HIMSS, anticipated 1/2008) as well as several articles on health law.

C. Martin Harris, M.D., M.B.A., FHIMSS is the Chief Information Officer and Chairman of the Information Technology Division of Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Additionally, Dr. Harris is Executive Director of e-Cleveland Clinic, a series of e-health clinical programs offered over the Internet.

Dr. Harris received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His residency training in general internal medicine was completed at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar fellowship in General Internal Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and holds a Masters in Business Administration in Healthcare Management from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Joy Keeler, MBA, a member of MITRE Corporations leadership team, plays a lead role in the health IT activities of the company while assisting MITRE clients develop and implement strategies to realize organizational missions and goals. Formerly Deputy Director of AHRQ’s National Resource Center for Health Information Technology (NRC), Ms. Keeler played a lead role in developing the strategy, operational infrastructure, partnerships and overseeing daily operations of the large and complex multi-year project to support the deployment of health IT.
Prior to joining the NRC, Ms. Keeler was Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs and Chief Information Officer at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ms. Keeler led the 6 year strategic and technical drive to implement an advanced clinical information system with unprecedented clinician participation throughout the Medical Center and Health Sciences Colleges at the University of Illinois Medical Center. The Medical Center’s electronic health record was honored with the Nicolas E. Davies Award of Excellence in 2001 and most recently the Enterprise Value Award by CIO Magazine.
Prior to joining the University, Ms. Keeler worked in other aspects of healthcare information technology focusing her efforts on driving process change with technology, product development and delivery strategies for integrated healthcare networks with IBM, Baxter and Peat Marwick.
Ms. Keeler, a Florida native, has served in national advisory roles including Chair of the Nicholas E. Davies Award Committee, JCAHO Expert Panel on Health Information Technology, National Rural Health IT Conference Planning Committee, HIMSS Advocacy Committee, Advance for Health Information Executives Editorial Board and was recognized with the 2003 Excellence in Corporate IT Leadership Award. Most recently Ms. Keeler was elected to the HIMSS Board of Directors.
Holly Miller, MD, MBA, FHIMSS is the CMIO at University Hospitals and Health Systems, a community-based system which serves patients at more than 150 locations throughout Northern Ohio, including seven wholly-owned and four affiliated hospitals. In partnership and collaboration with executive and service line management, Dr. Miller is the senior clinical executive for information systems and technology that support clinicians and healthcare consumers and their proxies in the delivery of patient care, and support of wellness. She provides leadership and vision for the strategic planning, operations, integration and implementation of information systems and services at UH, regionally, and nationally.
Prior to joining UH, she worked as a health information technology Managing Director for the Cleveland Clinic.
With more than 10 years of healthcare IT (HIT) experience, Dr. Miller is a frequent presenter at national meetings on HIT and ePHRs, and is active in healthcare informatics research.
As a member of HIMSS since 1999, Dr. Miller is on the HIMSS Board of Directors for a three year term beginning in 2008.
She previously served on the Public Programs Implementation Taskforce, and the Health Care Practice Taskforce of the National Governor’s Association State Alliance for e-Health. In Ohio she has been appointed to serve on the Ohio Health Information Partnership Advisory Board, by Governor Ted Strickland; and the Department of Insurance Advisory Committee on Eligibility and Real Time Claim Adjudication. She is a member of the CCHIT PHR Advisory Task Force. Dr Miller co-chaired the 2008 HIMSS HIT Advocacy Week in Washington, DC. In 2007 she was selected as one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives by Modern Physician Magazine in 2007.
Michael J. McGill, Ph.D. is responsible for the Health Sciences for Internet2. Dr. McGill was previously the Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the Henry Ford Health System and prior to that Chief Information Officer of the University of Michigan Health System. At the University of Michigan, McGill also headed its telecommunication and phone networks. He was Vice president of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), Inc. At Syracuse University, Mike was an Associate Professor, Assistant Dean for Research and the Ph.D. Program, School of Information Studies and Associate Professor of the School of Computer and Information Science. He was Program Director for Information Science for the National Science Foundation and Senior Computer and Information Science Advisor at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He holds a BA degree from Michigan State University and an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Syracuse University. He was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and is the author of articles and co-author of Introduction to Modern Information Retrieval published by McGraw-Hill.
Carol Selvey has over 25 years of experience leading innovative information technology (IT) projects in the healthcare industry for vendor and consulting organizations. Carol currently supports healthcare market development efforts and leads consulting engagements for The Revere Group, a leading global consultancy dedicated to delivering business and information technology (IT) solutions. She recently obtained a grant for the non-profit consortium of Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOS’s) in Florida, and coordinated the development of an advocacy and public awareness campaign related to electronic and personal health records and health information exchange throughout the state.
She previously led the U. S. Healthcare Strategic Services Management Consulting practice for a 5 billion dollar global company providing business process outsourcing and information technology outsourcing. She has also served as a Partner, Principal and Vice President for several healthcare consulting and staffing organizations and software vendor firms. With the global outsourcing vendor, Carol was in charge of turning around a loss leader consulting division into a successful, viable organization providing IT strategy, RHIO development, business plans and vendor selection for hospitals and large healthcare related entities.
In previous roles, Carol has expanded vendor and consulting organizations’ relationships with clients, partners and prospects and has led the development of new product/service offerings. She has directed engagements in project management office (PMO) and governance development, application implementation and support, end-user training and knowledge management, integrated testing, systems integration design, and infrastructure analysis/network design for multiple clients, while managing twenty-five to seventy five consultants at a time.
Besides expertise in division turnarounds, she has been a driving force in the creation and development of three start-up companies, serving as CEO of a niche consulting firm, which was later acquired by a diverse organization offering infrastructure, programming and provider/payor consulting.
Carol is a graduate of the School of Health Policy and Management at the University of Kansas, with a Masters degree in Health Services Administration. Her undergraduate degree from Vassar College is in French. She has attained Fellow status at HIMSS, has served as Chapter President and in several other regional and national roles with the Society. She is also a member of ACHE.
Jay Srini is currently the Chief Innovation Officer for UPMC Insurance Services Division and is responsible for developing the methods, tools and strategies that result in innovative health care solutions and positive consumer experiences. She will leverage her experience in information technology, research and leadership to provide total solutions to a quickly evolving health care methodology.
For the past four years, Jay has held the position of Vice President of Emerging Technologies for UPMC providing strategic direction and input regarding emerging technologies and solutions to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to that Jay was Managing Director for e-Health Initiatives at Internet Venture Works where she led technology and industry assessments of opportunities presented by strategic partners, investors and external sources and served in interim executive management roles for its' portfolio companies.
Jay Srini, is an experienced professional with more than 20 years of hands on operational, technology and executive leadership experience. She has proven expertise in multiple industries (financial, manufacturing, logistics and healthcare) and diverse organizations that include startup, large brick and mortar as well as academic institutions. Her background includes extensive healthcare experience and very strong operational and technical experience encompassing strategic and tactical planning, product design and development, personnel management and organizational startup activities.
Jay has a Master's Degree in Computer Science from New York University and a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Bucknell University and her executive education also includes the Kellogs School of Businessss. She is an active board member of HIMSS, , Pennsylvania e-Health Initiative, MIT Forum, Rainbow Kitchen Community Services and Charter member of TIE Pittsburgh. Jay serves on the Deans advisory board School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. She also serves on the advisory board of several enterpreunerial companies and on the advisory committee of several national healthcare related conferences.
Jonathan Teich, MD, PhD, FHIMSS
Dr. Jonathan Teich is chief medical informatics officer for Elsevier, the world's largest publisher of scientific, technical and health information. He is an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard, and a board-certified attending physician in emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), where he has practiced since 1983. He has been active in medical informatics and health information technology for over twenty years.
At Elsevier, Dr. Teich’s responsibilities include leading the development of the vision, strategy, and broad product design to transform Elsevier’s huge content base and publication resources into multi-level electronic reference, highly interactive clinical decision support, and other knowledge-based tools to support direct clinical practice and healthcare delivery. He also represents Elsevier in a variety of industry and government leadership councils on patient safety and quality of care, knowledge delivery, and clinical decision support.
Dr. Teich was the founder and first director of the BWH Center for Applied Medical Information Systems Research, and the Clinical Informatics Research and Development department at Partners Healthcare System. He was the primary designer of many of BWH's award-winning clinical information applications, including the computerized physician order entry system, ambulatory record, clinical decision support systems, emergency medicine systems, and the Handbook electronic information library.
Dr. Teich has authored or co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, books, and editorials in the field of medical informatics and healthcare information systems. He is the senior author of the recent eHealth Initiative consensus whitepaper, Electronic Prescribing: Toward Maximum Value and Rapid Adoption, and the government-sponsored expert report, Clinical Decision Support in Electronic Prescribing: Recommendations and an Action Plan. He is a co-author of the book, Improving Outcomes with Clinical Decision Support: An Implementer’s Guide, published in 2005.
Dr. Teich co-chairs the panel responsible for the HHS-sponsored Roadmap for National Action on Clinical Decision Support. He was the founder and first chair of the HIMSS Patient Safety and Quality of Care Steering Committee, and currently serves on its Board of Directors as well as the Clinical Decision Support workgroup. He is a board member of the eHealth Initiative, a member of the American Health Information Community Quality Workgroup, and a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. Dr. Teich was educated at Caltech, MIT, and Harvard Medical School.
Charlene S. Underwood, MBA, FHIMSS is director of Government and Industry Affairs for Siemens Medical Solutions.
A nationally recognized expert in the field of healthcare informatics, Ms. Underwood directs Siemens outreach and advocacy activities in emerging market initiatives, specifically those related to government activities in healthcare information technology (HIT) including: the U.S.
Government’s legislative and regulatory activities related to HIT; national, state, and regional healthcare information networks; Electronic Health Record (EHR) strategies; standards and interoperability; quality , patient safety, and pay for performance; and EHR product certification.
Ms. Underwood is delivering Siemens solutions message to key stakeholders throughout the healthcare industry and on Capitol Hill, while developing programs that enable Siemens leadership in key government and industry initiatives. She provides valuable input and direction to healthcare and government leaders on the power of HIT to transform healthcare through her leadership in high-profile industry organizations. She served as the first chair of Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (HIMSS) Electronic Health Record Vendor Association (EHRVA), is a member of the American Health Information Community (AHIC) Quality Workgroup and Expert Panel, and has served on many other advisory groups involved in HIT development. She recently earned the HIMSS Fellow designation and was elected to serve on the HIMSS Board. She also serves on the Delaware Valley Chapter HIMSS Board.
Ms. Underwood has a long history of actively advocating for industry involvement in defining how HIT is a means to improve patient safety, reduce cost, and improve patient outcomes. She has held leadership roles in influential organizations including HL7, in which she participated in defining the organization’s EHR functional standards and model; and in the Computerized Patient Record Institute (CPRI), where she was on the founding committee of the Nicholas E. Davies award for excellence in EHR implementation.
A 35-year employee of Siemens Medical Solutions HIT division, she has participated in defining business strategies and requirements for many of its clinical solutions, including INVISION®, the healthcare industry’s most widely installed HIT system, and Soarian®, the only healthcare information solution built to streamline healthcare processes through workflow engine technology.
Ms. Underwood is a Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. She earned an MBA in marketing from Temple University.
A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, she is married with 3 children and enjoys fitness activities, gardening, travel, and community outreach.

John Blair, III, M.D., is a healthcare and technology executive with broad experience across the healthcare industry including clinical practice, hospital planning and governance, revenue cycle management, managed care, public health, and healthcare informatics.
Dr. Blair is the CEO of MedAllies, a Health Information Service Provider Company established in 2001 and based in Fishkill, NY. MedAllies facilitates physician adoption of Health Information Technology and integrates the Healthcare community to improve safety, enhance quality and increase efficiency in the delivery and maintenance of individual and community health. MedAllies built and currently operates the Hudson Valley Health Information Exchange (HVHIE) which connects healthcare stakeholders throughout New York’s Hudson Valley. The HVHIE operates under the direction of the Taconic Health Information Network and Community Regional Health Information Organization (THINC RHIO), one of the nation’s leading Regional Health Information Organizations.
Dr Blair is the president of the Taconic IPA, a 3000 physician independent practice organization in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley. The company was formed in 1989, and over the last eight years has been involved in a major initiative to improve quality and transparency in healthcare. Dr. Blair has been instrumental in advancing a regional pay-for-performance program focusing on technology adoption and usage. The program includes multiple health plans, self-insured employers and the New York State employee Health Plan working together to coordinate performance measure, reporting and incentives.
Dr. Blair is a board-certified General Surgeon who spent fifteen years in academic medicine and private practice before becoming President of the Taconic IPA. While in clinical practice, he spent ten years as the managing partner of Hudson Valley Surgical Associates, a multi-specialty surgical group. Dr. Blair received his medical degree from Rush Medical School in Chicago and did his surgical training at the University of Texas Medical Center in Dallas. He performed a gastrointestinal fellowship at the Middlesex Hospital in London, England. He published extensively in Gastrointestinal Physiology, his primary area of research.
Dr. Blair currently Co-Chairs the Network workgroup for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology, and he is a member of the Health Information Management System Society (HIMSS) Advisory Board of Directors. Sunny Sanyal has overall leadership responsibility for McKesson Provider Technologies’ North American operations. As Chief Operating Officer, he oversees product development, implementation services, customer support, and sales and marketing functions for all products within health systems, ambulatory, imaging and pharmacy automation market segments.
Sanyal brings to this position more than 17 years of experience in healthcare information technology, serving in a variety of positions. Prior to his role as COO, Sanyal was group president of Clinical Solutions for MPT. He joined McKesson in 2004 from GE Healthcare where he led the Centricity Clinical Information Systems business. Prior to that role, he was responsible for global product management for Imaging Information Systems for GE Healthcare. His early career was devoted to developing software for IDX Systems Corporation and working with high-tech companies as a consultant for Accenture.
Sanyal received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bombay, India. He also holds a master of science degree in Industrial Engineering from Louisiana State University and a master of business administration from Harvard Business School.
