Ambulatory Care

The Role of IT Leadership in the Ambulatory Setting

The importance of ambulatory care in our healthcare delivery system and the need to accelerate the adoption of IT continue to be increasingly important for the healthcare industry and HIMSS. HIMSS is dedicated to strengthening its Ambulatory Care Initiative by continuing to work with providers, practice managers and communities to identify and demonstrate how IT can promote clinical and business integration solutions in the ambulatory setting.

Staff leadership is provided by Mary Griskewicz, MS, FHIMSS, Director of Ambulatory Information Systems. The Ambulatory Care Steering Committee is chaired by Jenifer Jarriel, CIO, Baylor College of Medicine. Many HIMSS members have volunteered to contribute as committees and task forces have taken on the challenge. If you would like to join the effort as the Society extends its benefits to reach the Ambulatory providers of healthcare, please review our Ambulatory Committees Task Force and Work Group  or contact Mary Griskewicz for additional information. The Ambulatory Information Systems Steering Committee leads the Society in working toward a goal of having 50 percent of physician practices using an Electronic Medical Record, or EMR, by 2010.

CMS has indicated that it would allow a hospital to pay for the interface between a provider and the hospital without any violation in Stark laws. This may be helpful to health centers that need a hospital to pay for programming an interface to the health center’s EMR so data can flow between the two. This was found on the Hosp Assoc of NYS (HANYS) web site.
