HIMSS continues to work with American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to support the ISO/TC 215 secretariat since 2003
Standardization in the field of health informatics work to achieve compatibility and interoperability between independent information systems and devices, and to reduce duplication of effort and redundancies. Healthcare Information Technology standards are developed, adopted, or adapted by standards development organizations, government agencies, professional associations, and care providers.
In the United States, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) isaccredited by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO/TC 215 is one of the technical committees attached to ISO, having 23 participating members and 23 observing members
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. ISO has over 170 technical committees (TC’s), whose subjects range from healthcare informatics (TC215) to plastics (TC61) and others. ISO is a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries, on the basis of one member per country (ANSI for the USA).
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was awarded the Secretariat for TC215, by ISO then HIMSS accepted the delegation for TC215 from ANSI. As the accredited standard development organization, ANSI may elect to keep the secretariat position or delegate it to another organization.
