About the Foundation

Mission

How the Foundation Helps the Industry
The HIMSS Foundation is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific or educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The HIMSS Foundation serves as the philanthropic arm of HIMSS, providing support and assistance to the organization, its members, and the industry through:

  • Financial assistance (scholarships) to students healthcare-IT related fields
  • Providing access for students to the Dorenfest Institute database
  • Providing financial relief/assistance for special need-based programs issues
Governance Council

The Governance Council of the HIMSS Foundation consists of 5 voting members and 1 non-voting member. Two voting members serve concurrently on the HIMSS Board of Directors, and three members are considered “at large”. The president/CEO of HIMSS serves as the non-voting member. At- large council members must also be current members and Fellows of HIMSS, must not be serving any other HIMSS leadership role, or have served on the HIMSS Board within one year of appointment start date. The Council is organized and governed by the articles set forth in the Foundation bylaws.

Council consists of 5 voting and 1 non-voting member

  • Non-voting member is the president/CEO of HIMSS
  • 2 voting members serve concurrently on HIMSS Board of Directors
  • 3 voting members are “at-large”
    • Other eligibility requirements for Council members
      • Must be current member and Fellow of HIMSS
      • At-large members cannot be serving in any other HIMSS leadership role nor have served on the HIMSS Board within one year of appointment start date

Committees

Committees of the Governance Council shall be standing or special. Committee chairs and members are appointed by the council chair and ratified by a majority vote of the Governance Council. The standing committees consist of the Scholarship and Fundraising Committee. Special committees can be created or dissolved at any time by resolution of the Council.

The HIMSS Foundation’s Scholarship Committee reviews scholarship applicants and selects winners, and it is made up of HIMSS members serving two-year terms.

The Foundation’s Fundraising Committee plans and develops strategies and tactics to raise funds for the Foundation. The Fundraising Committee is committed annually to raising money through the Annual Conference and Exhibition, as well through direct contact with donors. The Committee has two representatives from each of the following committees: HIMSS Fellows, HIMSS Chapter Leaders, Past HIMSS Board Members, Lifetime Members and at-large members.

Some of the highlights from past fundraising efforts include silent auctions in 1999 and 2000, and carnival games in 2001.

Scholarship Committee
Purpose- Promotes the scholarship program, reviews and selects scholarship recipient, consists of 14 members each serving 2 year terms

Fundraising Committee
Purpose- Plans and develops strategies and tactics to raise funds for the Foundation, members serve a 2 year term
