About Mary’s Center

Mary’s Center is a community health center serving over 60,000 people of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds in the Washington, DC metro area for over 30 years. With an integrated model of health care, education, and social services, Mary’s Center offers each participant individualized care on the path toward good health, stability, and economic independence.

Developing our Social Change Model

We recognized early on that caring only for your physical health concerns was simply not enough. To put you and your family on a path towards good health, stability, and economic independence, we knew we had to look at every part of your life and offer the appropriate combination of healthcare, education, and social support. With this in mind, we developed our Social Change Model (SCM), which allows us to offer medical, dental, and behavioral health services for the entire family, along with social services and family literacy services – all under one roof.

The success of our model was further demonstrated by the final report of an evaluation that we solicited from the Urban Institute and analysis from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which explains how this integrated approach has shown to make people healthier.

We encourage you to take advantage of our many services as we believe there is more than one way we can help you improve your life and health.

Prestige Community Resources

Prestige Community Resources (PCR) was established in May 2019 as the nonprofit arm of Prestige Healthcare Resources, a certified, preferred mental health provider in the District of Columbia.

PCR is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the critical needs of the underserved in our communities. As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to stress already-stressed communities, we’re here to help Navigate the New Normal. Services currently include the following:

Phone Drive: PCR provides phones to the homeless and indigent consumers who lack access to healthcare services. Lack of access to care is one of the biggest drivers of healthcare disparity. Many of the consumers being served live at or below the poverty level, so in this regard, we wanted to develop a strategy that would help to level the playing field for the communities that we serve. In a partnership with AT&T, we are able to purchase phones and plans at a reduced rate, (smart phones cost us approximately $50 and the plan is roughly $40 per month for unlimited data, talk and text). We have given over 100 phones this year alone. Raising money for this vital program is an area in which we may need board assistance.

Food Drive: PCR provides 315 COVID boxes to the community for persons who are food insecure on a weekly basis. The boxes of food contain critical food items such as tuna fish, peanut butter, rice, cereal, soup, milk and juice.  We also distribute PPE for COVID19, (masks and gloves/hand sanitizer); condoms, (HIV Prevention); and Narcan, (drug used to reverse opioid overdose). This is a vital outreach service to people throughout Wards 7 & 8, where the bulk of our consumers come from. We are seeking to expand this effort and become a full partner with the Capital Area Community Food Bank and would love to have board input, in order to grow these vital services.

HRSA Grant for Peer Support Education: PCR has a 4-year paraprofessional grant that targets persons and families that have been directly or indirectly impacted by the opioid epidemic. We are responsible for training 40-50 peers per year for the life of the grant in conjunction with Jordan Peer Recovery, (training organization). This grant provides an avenue by which consumers can develop a skill and enter the workforce in a role vital to helping others overcome what they themselves have experienced.

HAHSTA Grant for Harm Reduction: PCR has a small grant to provide harm reduction interventions and expand our capacity in SUD specifically because of the opioid epidemic, ( Washington DC is number one in the number of opioid-related overdose deaths in the country). We currently distribute Narcan and are looking to expand capacity through the development of a peer led board, provision of peer certification training and expansion of harm reduction activities.

DBH/SAMHSA Media Grant: PCR has a media grant from the Department of Behavioral Health and SAMHSA to provide a weekly podcast, 3-part documentary and 6 public service announcements that focuses on the "New Normal," as it relates to changes that have occurred due to the COVID19 Pandemic.
