Healthcare IT Innovations to Optimize Clinician Documentation in Care Delivery Webinar

Join the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community on October 12 at 12:00 pm CT as they present, “Documentation Burden: Healthcare IT Innovations to Optimize Clinician Documentation in Care Delivery.”

Changes in the types and levels of care required by patients engaging with healthcare organizations, along with a focus on achieving the tenets of the quadruple aim, have led to an increased requirement for documentation. Many benefits have resulted from enhanced documentation, including improvements in quality, patient safety and diagnostic accuracy. However, the burden of documentation requirements for clinicians has also led to a variety of challenges, including extended work hours, increased time constraints, increased professional workload and disruptions to the patient-provider encounter. This phenomenon has resulted in observed increase in medical errors, negative impacts on patient safety, high rates of clinician turnover and burnout.

This virtual round table brings together clinical informatics nursing thought leaders to discuss the pertinent issues related to present-day documentation burden in healthcare. A review of contributing causes and innovative strategies will be described and discussed, focusing upon solutions that address how healthcare IT is being actively leveraged towards defining processes and measures of interprofessional burdens in future work among clinicians.

Learning Objectives

• Discuss perspectives on documentation burden as it relates to clinician and interprofessional resource activity in healthcare delivery.
• Understand the domains of burden related to magnitude, directionality, tasks, and time impacting clinicians around the constructs of EHR time, work outside of work, inbox time, teamwork for orders and undivided attention to patients.
• Review innovative ideas to address documentation burden for specific groups of clinicians (nurses, physicians) and in the interdisciplinary work of clinicians.

Speakers

Vicky Tiase, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN Director, Research Science, New York-Presbyterian Hospital
Tiase is responsible for supporting a wide array of clinical information technology projects related to patient engagement and serves on the boards of AMIA, NODE.Health, and the CARIN Alliance. She advocates for policy initiatives that provide patients and caregivers control over their health data. Tiase completed her BSN at the University of Virginia, MSN at Columbia University and has a PhD from the University of Utah.

Seraphine Kapsandoy, PhD, RN, Chief Clinical Information Officer, Intermountain healthcare
In her current role, Kapsandoy partners with business and clinical caregivers to help them leverage industry leading technology to achieve patient care strategic goals and initiatives. Under her leadership, her teams have successfully implemented and provided ongoing optimization of that EHR for Intermountain hospitals, countless clinics, and ambulatory care facilities. Kapsandoy received her BSN and PhD in informatics from the University of Utah.

Jud Simonds DNP, RN-BC, NE-BC Director, Nursing Informatics, San Diego Health System
Simonds is responsible for the acute and ambulatory informatics teams and spent time as an industry executive in the healthcare information technology vendor space, leading clinical implementation teams of new technology into healthcare settings. Simonds holds a DNP from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas, and a MS in Nursing Leadership from California State University – Dominguez Hills.
