"Everyone deserves a measure of health regardless of class, power, race, or prestige." Sophia F. Brown, PhD, RN-BC, CPHIMS, PMP. Sr. Program Manager, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Sophia Brown is a member of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community and a former member of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee.

Why are you passionate about championing health and wellness?

Everyone deserves a measure of health regardless of class, power, race, or prestige. As a healthcare provider, it is my civic responsibility to increase awareness of health and wellness within society. Sharing knowledge about healthy lifestyle choices such as the benefits of water, exercise, natural food choices, and stress-reduction measures are critical to well-being. Health and wellness are on a continuum ranging from a high level of optimal health to a disease state or poor health. I am passionate about using my knowledge to help others achieve and maintain health.

Tell us about a collaboration that makes you proud.

Over the last several years, I have contributed through several collaborative activities with HIMSS, such as my appointment to the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Committee, peer reviewer for the Online Journal of Informatics Nursing (OJIN), and participating in the Nursing Education and Social Determinant of Health taskforces. Being a lifelong learner, I also find great pleasure in reviewing educational offerings for the yearly HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition.

What are some words of advice for others in your profession?

Stay committed to your practice and leverage technology to enhance it, but remember it is a tool you cannot substitute for critical thinking skills. Be an advocate for your practice and let your voice be heard.

What gives you hope for the future?

Advancements in technology and human subject research give me hope for the future of healthcare. These are the building blocks to mitigate access to care and disparity issues, improve patient health outcomes, and reduce high healthcare costs.

What's your favorite quote and why?

My favorite quote is, “The sky is the limit”. It fuels my drive and keeps me dreaming of a better future where possibilities are endless.
