Embracing a Culture of Improvement Through Quality Project Initiatives

HIMSS Analytics recognizes NCH Healthcare System for their revalidation as a Stage 7 healthcare system, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) SM

Sepsis remains the leading cause of death in hospitals, despite the fact that sepsis starts outside the hospital about 80 percent of the time.

Starting in 2012, emergency and critical care departments at NCH Healthcare System championed a quality project initiative aimed at reducing sepsis mortality rates. By implementing the appropriate notification alerts within each patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), staff are able to monitor each patient’s risk for sepsis ahead of time.

As a result of these efforts, the organization saw a 78 percent decline in sepsis mortality rates from 2012 to 2017. They also observed cost avoidance of more than $8 million since its implementation. The initiative continues to evolve and embraces a culture of improvement, based on evidence-based best practices and analytics individualized to the NCH emergency department and inpatient environment.

HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Revalidation

HIMSS Analytics is proud to recognize NCH Healthcare System for their recent revalidation as a Stage 7 healthcare system, as tracked by the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM).

“At NCH Healthcare System, our mission is to help everyone live a longer, happier and healthier life. We have cultivated a multi-disciplinary team that understands the importance of healthcare IT and is able to leverage their knowledge to help us truly meet our mission,” said Jonathan King, the system chief nursing officer at NCH Healthcare System. “With our ‘Stop Sepsis: Save Lives with QSOFA’ project, we were able to utilize our IT system to reduce sepsis mortality by a significant amount.”

“NCH Healthcare also placed a focus on improving nurse efficiency,” said Philip Bradley, regional director of North America for HIMSS Analytics. “Through a multidisciplinary, team-oriented approach, NCH was able to reduce nurse documentation time by 9.7 percent.”
