How do you support health equity?

Racial disparity within maternal health in the United States is just heartbreaking. The pandemic helped to expose some of the existing challenges that have been present for a long time, but they are much broader than this alone. I support health equity by creating public awareness of this issue and getting involved with advocacy efforts at the local, state, and federal levels through programs supported by HIMSS.

What is the current challenge you look forward to conquering?

Nursing informatics leaders provide a consistent message that has recently resonated with me: Don’t be afraid to say yes to new opportunities. Complacency often equals stability and comfort, and it can lead to stagnation. As part of my growth strategy, I have challenged myself to say yes to opportunities that might take me out of my comfort zone, knowing that they will contribute to my professional growth.

What gives you hope for the future?

I see hope in the awareness and tenacity of our young nurses. The new generation is no longer content with the status quo. They are remarkable at recognizing gaps and acting to close them through innovation, advocacy, or other means. Nurses are inspired to become innovators through programs like NursePitch™ from the American Nurses Association (ANA) and HIMSS, and Johnson & Johnson’s Nurse Innovation Hackathon. They provide an excellent venue to showcase ground-breaking solutions to problems experienced by many healthcare providers.

What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?

I enjoy photography and travel. Living a day in the life of others reminds me that regardless of our differences, our similarities as people are much greater.
