"Healthcare should not be hard; we must meet our patients where they are in their lives to ensure they can access the care they need." Carolyn Masengale, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Carolyn Masengale is a member of the HIMSS Nursing Informatics Education and Networking Task Force.

Why are you passionate about championing health and wellness?

Health and wellness are at the core of a person’s being. I am passionate about connecting patients to the healthcare resources they need to facilitate their best life. I have been a registered nurse for 27 years, with 20 years in healthcare leadership. I have had the honor to care for the people who care for the people. Healthcare should not be hard; we must meet our patients where they are in their lives to ensure they can access the care they need.

How do you support health equity?

Our patients are seen in the wound care clinics weekly and in the hyperbaric medicine program every weekday. They often suffer from multiple co-morbidities and have challenges getting transportation to their appointments. To support health equity, we implemented a program for those with transportation insufficiencies by leveraging a rideshare app. The program has led to improved outcomes for our patients.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how did you overcome it?

One big challenge came when I was working in the medical device industry. I found that technical leaders focus on the product without knowing the downstream effect on the clinical teams. In my leadership role, I could leverage my experience as a clinician as I worked with the technical teams to keep a laser focus on the impact on clinicians. Being curious, collaborative, and working closely with your teams is critical for success.

What is your favorite quote, and why?

I believe we have to be present and enjoy each day. I love the quote from Winnie-the-Pooh that says, “Any day spent with you is my favorite day. So today is my new favorite day.” I try to make each day my favorite day.
