Development of a Monthly Telehealth Clinic in Guatemala

The Midwest Gateway Chapter is hosting a new educational program with a case study on “Improving Health Outcomes with Telehealth.” This presentation shows how the School of Nursing at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) initiated a pediatric telehealth service for children suffering from various health issues and malnutrition in Escuintla, Guatemala. These children are served by the not-for-profit Land of Hope Community with a medical clinic, school, community kitchen and basic housing.

“In Guatemala, if you live past age five there’s a good chance you’ll live a good long life,” said Bernadette Sobczak, DNP and Assistant Professor. “The Land of Hope provides a daily fortified formula to help reduce the rate of chronic malnutrition, but many children have underlying conditions or parasites that prevent them from thriving. By tracking their health through the EMR and providing telehealth visits, we can now diagnose and treat these children consistently.”

This case proves how informatics and telehealth can improve health outcomes for underserved communities at home and globally.
