Nicolaus is a Senior Partner in our London office, and the Chairman of QuantumBlack, McKinsey’s advanced analytics and artificial intelligence firm. He brings decades of experience in applying analytical techniques to his work on significant business problems in pharma, healthcare, industrial, and financial institutions.
He serves at the forefront of McKinsey’s advanced analytics work. He helped found and scale McKinsey Analytics, whose team of 5,000 technologists and consultants help companies create and scale new technical delivery models for analytics and AI. He also oversaw McKinsey’s acquisition of QuantumBlack, its scaling to become the firm’s center of excellence and innovation in AI. As its chairman, Nicolaus and QuantumBlack help companies use advanced analytics and AI responsibly to identify gains that have significant performance impact.
Nicolaus also oversees a number of technology and AI partnerships with other firms. He chairs McKinsey’s Technology Council, which gathers tech leaders from across industries and McKinsey to assesses and track the trends and other developments in business and technology.
Previously, Nicolaus led the digital and analytics practices worldwide for McKinsey, as well as the global healthcare practice. His background is in business economics with a focus on operations research. He holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Münster and was a John J. McCloy Scholar at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He speaks frequently in various forums on the responsible use of AI, data-enabled cultures, and the importance of the use of protocols in AI.
