Dr Johanna Mäkelä

Johanna Mäkelä is working as a Director of Research and Services at FINBB- Finnish Biobank Cooperative. She gained her PhD from University of Turku in 2015. After gaining her PhD she conducted her postdoc studies in Computational Biomedicine and Bioinformatics developing computational models for longitudinal data in various diseases.

Mäkelä  joined FINBB as Director of Research and Services in June 2021. Before that she was working as a Biobank Director at Finnish Clinical Biobank Tampere and Head of Department at Tampere University Hospital. In her current position she is responsible for enabling and improving the access to samples, data and patients in Finnish Biobanks. Her responsibilities include also developing Fingenious(R) services together with the team to match the needs of the researchers. Mäkelä has solid  background in biobank research but also in RWD/RWE studies as well as clinical trials. Her ambition is to bring new biomedical research projects to Finland.
